The importance of learning about DEI

Teaching DEI (diversity, equity, & inclusion) promotes student empowerment through creating a sense of belonging in the classroom—ensuring that students feel heard, seen, and are encouraged to think differently. Research has found that this becomes a critical factor in influencing student retention and graduation rates.

Learning about DEI is important in making students of all backgrounds feel valued and affirmed by exploring and honoring their differences.

In this course, students will learn the following:

• The urgent state of the world when it comes to DEI

• The conceptualization of DEI

• The differences between diversity vs. equity, vs. equality, vs. inclusion

• The landscape and role of DEI in our education systems and workforce through the lens of both the majority and the minority

• Why everyone has their own internal biases when it comes to DEI & how to identify their own unconscious biases

• Their own definition of what it means to be diverse, equitable, equal, and inclusive

• How to identify appropriate ways to confront inequalities, micro-aggressions, and internal biases in organizations
